Generations Meet and Mix - Part II
March 29 - April 25, 2010
The second installation of Generations Meet and Mix involves works by
three students, Ryan Hnat, Claudine Luchsinger, and Martha Moore Westbrook who
have had some direct involvement with The Maslow Collection, and their pairings
reflect that involvement. Five other students, who were not yet familiar with
the Collection, presented their works for the curator to determine and set up
a potential dialogue.
To comment on a few of the pairings: The circular energy and heavy impasto in
Martha Moore Westbrook’s painting clearly relates to the intensity and
weight in the work by Tony Wong, and the object-like forms that hover in Ryan
Hnat’s painting speak to the similar treatment of the objects in the works
by Will Mentor and Charles Arnoldi. The one wall with Jack Goldstein’s
painting and the photograph by Todd Watts establishes a strong orientation to
the “spectacular” (or spectacle) that is also present in the student
works by Ilene Bustos and Rachael Howard. The relationship between the wall
sculpture by Kevin O’Toole and the glass corner piece by Tony Pachick
may be less easy to apprehend at first glance. Tony initially mentioned to me
that the glass is quite fragile and can break easily, as a result, the “work”
incorporates these breaks and thus changes over time. Similarly, O’Toole’s
use of silver leaf in his work sets up a gradual change in appearance as it
tarnishes; neither work is intended to be static.
