Generations Meet and Mix - Part 1

February 20 - March 21, 2010

It was not certain when we initiated this exhibition concept some months ago how many students would respond. When the day came for students to bring in their work it was clear that we would need to have two separate exhibitions, one following the other, in order to accommodate all the works, and possible dialogues between the works.

This first installation features work by students who for the most part created their works based on their selection of specific works in The Maslow Collection, responding to either the artists’ subject matter, formal elements, stylistic approaches or conceptual devices. For instance, the white painting by Jen Bulay not only used the "target" subject matter of Jasper Johns' print Target with Four Faces, but she also paints in encaustic which is the archaic medium that Johns has championed since the late 50s.

It should be noted that in the call for submissions of works for Generations Meet and Mix it was not required that the students preselect specific works from The Maslow Collection. As a result, a number of the student works that will be included in the second installation are much more open to comparison and interpretation, giving a much different take on the possibilities of a dialogue.

Pairings in this first installation:

Ryan Bossert in dialogue with Gary Lang
Lori Ann Brunetti in dialogue with Hilla and Bernd Becher
Jen Bulay in dialogue with Jasper Johns
Megan Donnelly in dialogue with Hilla and Bernd Becher
Marguerite Innes in dialogue with Hamish Fulton
Sue Jenkins in dialogue with Sol LeWitt
Megan Kamosky in dialogue with Alice Aycock
Timothy Meyers in dialogue with Mark Cohen
Beth Rinker in dialogue with Melissa Meyers
